RNDM - Hideaway Lane EP

  • For the tenth offering from the Dial sub-label, Laid, the imprint have given over a 12-inch in full to RNDM. In return, Oliver Kargl offers up three versions of "Hideaway." Despite citing Ron Trent, Mr. Fingers and Frankie Knuckles as the inspirations behind these tracks, it's not immediately apparent by the delicate and metallic pads in the dub version. It sounds more like a Meanwhile release than a Chicago classic. This is by no means an insult: Glittering synths, bouncing bass and crisp drums, accompanied by a stunning breakdown make this version a contender for the strongest track of this release. The original track comes closer to the aforementioned influences, with a heavier, more driving bassline and harder drums. The soft pads still provide the atmosphere for the track, but this one is the one you'll want for peak-time situations. And you'll most likely want to use it often. The bassline on the Shine version is its selling point, proving a deep foundation for synths that have been shuffled and restructured into a more building and almost siren-like sound. It creates a powerful tension that lasts long after the track is over. One of the best Laid releases yet.
