- Even if the music itself isn't your thing, it's hard not to admire the approach that Lunar Disko takes. So far, the Dublin label has put out everything from Automatic Tasty's analogue tracks, Submersible Machine's Drexciyan jams, Faceless Mind's high-paced purist electro and David Vunk's Italo disco-fuelled grooves. Now it turns its attention to house music, but don't expect to hear any bog-standard, bongo-filled mush. Mark Du Mosch's "Blessings" starts with rolling drums and mellow, melodic chords, but soon makes nods to the dark side with an evil bassline.
Despite this, the mood on "Blessings"—and on the rest of the EP—is resolutely upbeat, with Du Mosch using an infectious disco filter to offset the menacing low end. Like his recent Uzuri EP, Lerosa introduces musical elements to classic Chicago jacking, with melancholic synths and jazz riffs to swoon for inhabiting the busy, bleepy groove—and newcomer Meschi also impresses, with a seductive piano house groove featuring a gloriously melodic riff that sounds like the Glaswegian is a theremin virtuoso.
However, Automatic Tasty steals the show: "Welcome Ohm Luv" is based on a churning Heard-style bassline, sweeping chords and seductive bleeps that shift from Chicago grittiness to bleep techno tripiness. Lunar Disko's modus operandi may sound like commercial suicide, but maybe if more labels were as adventurous, listeners and DJs would not be confronted with an endless stream of identikit outlets.
