Snuff Crew - Winter in June

  • Nothing can be certain except death and taxes. And perhaps that Snuff Crew's next record will sound like old-school house. The masked duo from Germany are nothing if not consistent in that regard. Whether it be rim-shots or claps, cowbells or snares, the looming presence of Roland drum machines casts a imposing shadow over their entire discography. "Winter in June," with its faithfully reproduced acid splashes and Italo flashes, is as good an example as any of Snuff Crew's pros and cons: well-produced, perfectly playable, utterly disposable. Dance Disorder's not wildly dissimilar remix centres around the melodic breakdown of the original whose chord transitions and synth sallies relieve the rhythm composer of its cross-bearing. Both versions will stand up adequately on the throwback-friendly dance floors of late. But while recent trends have served them fortuitously, and they're believable in their aping, it's very much a single-stringed bow.
