Piece of Shh - Diablo Riddim EP

  • "Diablo Riddim" is the kind of mystery-genre banger that Serbian label Svetlana Industries seems to be staking its claim in: The slow tempo and toxic textures bubble and boil like acid house, but the unpredictably swung rhythm staggers like dubstep. Whatever it is, it's a forceful piece of snarling metal, sawtooth synths eating away at the borders of the track with ravenous bloodlust and smothering mournful murmurs in the background. It's all dragged forward by a chugging growl of a bassline, bringing it more in line with recent chiptune grime a la Butterz or No Hats No Hoods. It's not a bad portrait of the current London sound as seen from Belgrade. Svetlana Industries bring in the big guns with a Zomby remix, marking a rare 2010 release from a producer who invites as much slobbering praise as he does dismissive invective. Typically inconsistent, his remix here sounds like it took less time to throw together than its pathetic running time. While it plays the same drunken accelerate-decelerate tempo games of his best productions, its limp-wristed puddle-splashing sounds lazy next to the ingenious interlocking gears of its neighbours. The remix front is rounded off properly by Spanish producer Hektagon, who does a fix-up-look-sharp dubstep reconfiguration of "Diablo Riddim," replacing the tantalizing ambiguity of the original with a functional and satisfyingly reinforced backbone.
