Ramadanman & Appleblim - Void 23

  • "Void 23"'s inclusion on Damian Lazarus' intriguing, if slightly wayward, Fabric 54 mix arguably represented one of the more linear moments of the compilation. That probably says a lot more about the off-kilter tone of Lazarus' selections, though, than it does about "Void 23," as Ramadanman & Appleblim's production is far from a straight-down-the-line techno effort. Despite the kick drum not joining the party for nearly two minutes, it captures and holds your attention from the off with a subtlety layered fist of half-caught whispers, crackling pads and an arpeggiated alarm that at times completely dominates the track, while at others fades almost completely into obscurity. It's seemingly made for the dark catacombs of sonic bliss beneath the pavements of London and Berlin. On the B-side, Carl Craig's re-edit follows a similar structural path as the original, but gives it an injection of steroids, beefing up the kick drum and bassline. It's not an easy listen—some of the hats have so much flange, they sound like they might be trying to transport your brain to some distant alien planet—but it'll be the cut of choice for those playing at peaktime.
