8bitch - Equinox

  • Slovenian Maya Medvesek is an interesting lady. The press literature spins odd tales of being Ronnie Corbett's stunt double and a fake left hand, but more certain is the fact that she's involved with a range of activities, including journalism, singing and being a motion capture model for DJ Hero. All of this variety and chaos is reflected in her tracks. As you might expect, then, Equinox presents four interesting experiments into frantic ambience. With "Orpheus," it starts as it means to go on, with a chopped-up, angular mesh of drum samples replaced by shiny, dripping synths, before the two combine and sit into each other for the rest of the track. "Hathor" has pastoral oohs and aahs and an equally pastoral pad which bends its way around three notes, spreading and then stuttering in an imperfect way, with both of these providing the ambient bit, and a clattering kitchen of dancehall syncopation underneath. There are times when it sounds a bit unpolished, like she's taken presets or beat mashing plugins with a shortfall on thought, but for many that'll be part of the charm. The highlight is "Astarte," whose pattering, high-hundreds BPM drums and tinkling, sparkly bells filled in with smooth pads flutter around gracefully. The circling synth which isn't immediately upfront, but characterises the track, exemplifies the fact that the lovely synths are the best thing about nearly everything here. "Isis" is full of them; more bells, this time fuller and warmer, oscillating pseudo-randomly, making gentle progressions with background shakers.
