Bonar Bradberry - Suila Grande

  • London's Needwant is the label behind the Future Disco and Future Balearica compilations; those titles, plus singles from the likes of Mark E, The Revenge and Soul Clap, give a general idea of what to expect from this EP from Bonar Bradberry. The Leeds-based producer has previously established his nu disco bona fides on releases for Red Music and Future Classic, but with "Suila Grande," he expands his range somewhat. Pairing a bare kick/clap rhythm with shakers and a clave pattern, the groove sounds like it might be inspired by A Number of Names' "Sharevari," albeit slower and mildly Latinized; the ragged synth bass below and keening ostinato overhead both suggest Carl Craig's influence. It's a nicely spacious track; the absence of hi-hats leaves ample room for contrasting synth chords and a blocky piano solo, and while it's ultimately more about atmosphere than riffs, there's enough variety in the arrangement, and enough "live" feeling in the playing, that it stays engaging throughout. Pete Herbert's remix doesn't add much, besides some funk guitar riffs, but it's a much tougher beast, enhanced with a more active bassline and a bright, '90s R&B feel. For those keeping score in the race to bring house music to a crawl, "For All Time," on the flip, dials it all the way back to 90 BPM, with softly bleating synthesizer counterpoints, congas and slo-mo hi-hats surging to a full-frequency climax. It's like Balearic Border Community. Burnski's dub of the same is a different track entirely: a bass-driven, chord-heavy deep house number, well produced and very current sounding, but having little to do with the daydream drift of the original.
