Erdbeerschnitzel - To an End

  • It's time to step outside of the club for a bit, perhaps to smoke a cigarette or take some fresh air. Through the fire-exit left slightly ajar, under the heater-lamps and starry nite, the music takes on a curious quality. Detail is fuzzy but the impact clear—it's a backdoor dub of impressionistic primacy, a vibe that Erdbeerschnitzel (Tim Keiling) has square on nailed. He ties in with a growing emergence of R&B references within a framework of house including the likes of Hot Nature and Wolf & Lamb, but while those acts excel at lacing their music with neon glow, Keiling pares it down in the basement where he finds a unique set of acoustics. Voices sing sweet nothings (literally, the lyrics are beautifully incomprehensible) and melodies bubble underwater, as he treats us to a feast of depth and soul. "To an End" slowly unwinds into a sprawling, bottom-heavy dub adorned with comely female vox, and whereas "I Wonder" is faster and more frolic, it's still all about the totality of the sonic haze. In both cases it's a pretty one. Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer turn "To an End" into a more candid dance floor number that fits to the high-paced funk of the latter's Arto Mwambe project. But the novelty is Erdbeerschnitzel himself who, in a career only a few EPs young, has managed to forge a musical signature as colourful as it is different.
