Dirty Doering - I Would

  • The Bar25 imprint fronts one of the most (in)famous clubs in the world. So why does Matthew Styles' remix of Dirty Doering's "I Would" somehow feel buried? At 19 minutes long, the Horizontal man's extended modular jam is the sweetener for buying digitally; but the chances are you've been overlooking the imprint anyways. Bearing very little resemblance to its Motown-sampling father, Styles' version is all dew drops on petals and legato poise. LFOs and filters gently blow wind in the sails of multiple interlocking sequences, while choice drums mark signposts and landmarks on this third-of-an-hour excursion. Dirty Doering's original further emphasizes the adage of not judging a label by its cover. "I Would"s marriage of Billy Preston & Syreeta Wright's 1979-released "With You I'm Born Again" and Spanish guitars will certainly be divisive. But watch the video cut to shots of the Spree-side club, and you can envisage DJs willing to play the end of summer card and getting thorough use out of this pop-leaning curio. Acid Pauli and Marcus Meinhardt's versions, meanwhile, bring things further in line with expectations. Pauli offers a remix suffused with guitar chatter and reversed string samples, while Meinhardt leads "I Would" back into the wooden shack. Both remixes are capable enough examples of the form (save for some clumsy vocal usage on Meinhardt's part) but lack the endeavour that created fresh light in the other two cases.
