San Soda / Maxim Lany - WPH / Lany Recordings Summer Special 2010

  • One of the most reliable house imprints over the past two years, We Play House, has made a name for itself largely by championing a single producer, San Soda. Luckily, he's a producer worth rallying behind: The young Belgian has an innate ability to write (or, every so often, steal) satisfying hooks. But what I find so fascinating about his work thus far is the sense of space that that nearly each (great) track has. It's unfussy, and, as any producer can tell you, sometimes that's the hardest music of all to make. "Birdies That Fly," one of two efforts from this split label, split distributor, split 12-inch is one of the great ones. Taking a sampled vocal that adds "I gather melodies from..." to the title, it gives you a few piano notes, an "ooooo" and a funky house beat and little else. It's all that it needs. "Voor De Sfeer" has more of an electro influence on it, and isn't quite as immediately successful. But Maxim Lany's A-side banger "The Owgee" makes this release a must-have by slowly bringing up a filtered "yeah yeah" through twitchy funk. It sounds like a rawer version of the refined bangers Arearemote churns out on a regular basis, and about 200% more vital.
