Demdike Stare - Liberation Through Hearing

  • Look deep into the interests of Demdike Stare's Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty, and the otherworldly music they make together begins to make more sense. Whittaker records on Modern Love as MLZ, bringing his expert understanding of dub and techno textures to the table. Canty, meanwhile, helps out with Finders Keepers, an imprint devoted to bringing obscure French porno soundtracks and Turkish psych to the wider world. Needless to say, these guys are record collectors. And they bring that mentality to bear on the Demdike Stare project by making all of it—the music, the art—seem like exactly the sort of random, amazing record you'd pick up in a secondhand store and walk out feeling like you've found a gem that no one else knows about. Why else would they press a record of such fantastic droning ambience and put it out on the usually dance floor-driven Modern Love? Or bother to put together such a pagan-baiting pie chart of black-and-white imagery as the cover art? As its title suggests, the music on Liberation Through Hearing is music that demands less talk and more listening. All that I can offer is you probably shouldn't listen to this with the lights off, even if EP highlight "Matilda's Dream" is one hell of a tempting reason to do so.
