Arno E. Mathieu - Astral Caravan EP

  • As digital music consumption becomes more and more the norm, names are becoming more important. Often, it's all you've got to go by. Many would sensibly walk straight by when presented with a track title like "Astral Caravan," but others might be gagging for a festival and not have any money. Like, I feel your pain, man. "Astral Caravan," huh? Dude, far out. OK, you get my point. This track by Parisian and Clima label manager Arno E. Mathieu, who appeared on DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted House imprint last year, sure does what it says on the tin, and fortunately it does it well. So: flamenco guitars, clattering, tribal-style drums, a hypnotic, sultry bass motif. Very mystic. It's even got moaning gypsy voices over the top. The arrangement is progressive, and the track builds layers and layers, washing forward in a delirious frenzy. Driven by a repeated minor guitar strumming, a Spanish guitar solo weaves its way over the first half of the track, and then a Floydian synth wail, overly synthetic sounding violin, and chorded piano take turns to solo in a similar vein. The Mediteranean (sic) and Overseas versions tone down the solos to varying degrees, if that all sounds a bit much. Pick your vibe carefully before you drop this one, but if you catch it right, it just might make the night.
