- When it comes, when it comes, when it comes. Isn't it just like house music to ruminate on possibility and anticipation for so long that the actual event never even happens? The beat goes on and on and on but never changes; there's no payoff. This isn't a problem for Deep Teknologi, who make the ride so interesting that it doesn't matter that there's no big "drop" or peak moment—just immaculately and expertly built tracks.
The Deep Teknologi crew are slowly but surely making their name with a unique brand of electro-infused house: tough, jaunty and UK to the bone. A loose (and rather large) collective, their sound is a fussy and clean one, uncluttered and direct. Any bit of digital grit present is transformed into a magnificently aggressive edge, something that J. Bevin's productions ably take advantage of.
The third release on their in-house, digital-only eponymous label is the first from Bevin, who hits hard with the jumpy UK funky banger "When It Comes," a track that's been highlighted in the should-be-legendary Deep Teknologi mixes since late 2009. The track is all about contrast, its overloaded electrified synth riff pounding obnoxiously over top the hollow drums that bounce almost weightlessly, as the unforgettable vocal sample echoes off into the man-made magnetic fields. "Jump Up" abandons the playful bounciness for straight-up thrashing; if "When It Comes" had thrilling interplay, "Jump Up" is tandem destruction as the synth and percussion merge for an earth-shaking rhythm. Going back to that vocal sample, the second part goes "I won't even notice"—and it's hard to disagree, because these tracks are so easy to get trapped in that you won't even know what's going on until the dreaded silence finally takes over.
