Challenge - Broken Clock EP

  • Put together, "Challenge - Broken Clock - Marketing" has an appealingly deadpan quality. I guessed semi-lo-fi, experimental, art-fucky house, and it's too bad I'm not a gambling man, because I could have bought myself lobster tonight if I'd put cash on it. The three updated mutant-disco tracks here are clearly of a piece without really sounding too much alike. It's their jaggedness of construction that binds them. "Broken Clock" has at its background this persistent popping-sound. Lots of odd, pretty details float through the mix and sometimes all come up at once, but the firm drums, lazy surf guitar (these guys like chillwave, clearly) and stringy bassline jam loosely around the pulse, easy and muscular. "Wind Up" is faster, more buoyant, but also, with its slightly fritzing synth textures inside a more rigid structure, more obvious than "Broken Clock" and more obviously pleasurable: this one's aimed for the body while the A is for the head(s). Genius of Time, from Gothenburg, Sweden, remakes "Wind Up" into hollow, mysterious New York house. It's the clear DJ pick here, but everything is worth digging into again and again.
