Oracy - Bass Mood

  • Talk about anonymity: Not only do we not know who Oracy is, it's almost impossible to find his (or her) records in the shops. The first isn't so much of a problem for the non-obsessives in the crowd. The second is down to the unique pressing policy of Don Williams' Mojuba imprint, which almost invariably ensures that its limited-edition releases sell out. These days, "limited" hardly matters, given the state of the record industry. But with editions that sometimes barely reach over 100, the demand is clearly there. It should be for Oracy's latest too, which continues his run of excellent work for the imprint. Tunes have now appeared on five separate 12-inches, and this two-tracker ranks among his most accomplished yet. "Bass Mood" sputters along like Petre Inspirescu's wonderfully wonky "Sakadat." This time, though, the bassline hits even depper, barreling along while a voice keeps intoning the word "boogie." Indeed. "Funk Advice," meanwhile, pumps along in a deeper fashion with chords taking center stage. You can hear a surface hiss throughout. Coupled with hats and a snare that sound like they're in the room with you, "Funk Advice" has a presence that even analogue heads often lack.
