Maetrik - Gliding Blind EP

  • Peak time deep house, deep tech house or...? Questions that will probably be asked, but that are almost certainly not necessary to answer when discussing Eric Estornel's new EP. With close to a decade of studio time behind him, Estornel's worked through the rise and fall of many a sub-genre and here seems to be concentrating on the job of making dance music to, you know, dance to. The crisp fizz towards the start of "Glider" is almost indistinguishable from an effervescent tablet plinking into a glass of water and just as easy on the senses; returning mid-breakdown to give us another welcome wave of brain-numbing pleasure. Pain-killing metaphors aside, it's a warm, lush track with a few catchy vocal snippets that hits the spot nicely without ever trying too hard to do so. "Kemik" is a little faster and a lot more interesting; a meltdown in a robotics factory soundtracked by a deep, marching bassline and a simmering pad low in the mix that rarely and subtlety glides into full effect but provides a beautiful layer of atmosphere throughout. "Marinda" is darker and more menacing, with an effected spoken word vocal occasionally piping up, but it's the emphasis on groove and dance floor friendliness that really makes these cuts worthy of your attention.
