  • I first heard this guy through his internet radio show, then I discovered he releases tunes aswell. I picked up the Step On It 12", and I'm really into the jazzy breaks style. Side A: The lead track is an uptempo number with a swinging jazz bass, and some sweet cymbals - underpinned by a solid kick drum, and with some nice flute and vocal samples - all pretty live sounding. The next track is 'Live At The Plaza' - which has a more downtempo hip-hop feel to it, but still keeps the jazzy side going with another massive bass loop and some big piano. A nice guitar chugs away in the background, and Rubberfunk has done his own interpretation of the Tru-Playaz 'Super Sharp Shooter' in the middle ... Side B: It looks like three tracks on the flipside, but it's actually three parts of the same song - 'Chaser' Pt.s 1, 2 & 3. It starts with some wierd synth pads and an 808 kick, brings in a funky drum break and some wah guitar and eventually more drums. Part Two has some nice Latin style piano that reminded me of bits from 'A Little Samba' by Ugly Duckling. Part Three breaks down the drums nicely to round out the 12". If you're into UK labels like tru Thoughts and Ninja Tune, then you should try to get hold of this!
