Le Loup - Be Black

  • Spoken-word vocals in house music are tricky costumers. For every all-conquering Green Velvet sermon, there seems to be hundreds of middle-of-the-road monologues around. I know I'm listening to house music, and I know that house is the mother, the creator etc. etc. blah, blah, blah. Stop banging on about it, and let me listen. Not so for Le Loup. "I'll Never Be Black" delivers dark poetry from Maya Angelou over the top of softly plucked strings, inharmonious keys and sharp percussion. "The plastered saints gazing down beneficently on kneeling mothers picking undigested beans from yesterday's shit" isn't exactly "if house is a nation," but in the context of the track it's achingly beautiful and adds further complexity to what is already an intriguing track. However, if being lectured about "hearts and genitals in hand" is a little rich for your blood, there's also a dub that dispenses with the vocal but keeps all other elements fully intact. "Give Me Some" is more predictable, but no less enjoyable. There's a hint of dubstep's influence in the intermittent throb of the stumbling bassline, but the rest is straight-up-deep-house-vibes-no-messin'. The vocals again add another welcome layer of lushness, but this time they repeat the same fairly indistinguishable utterances again and again until you can't remember life without them.
