Syrinx - B.D.O. EP

  • One of the main criticisms of Detroit-inspired techno is that it ends up sounding like a poor copy of the original. But what happens when a European producer seeks inspiration from a plurality of related derivatives? In this instance, the results are impressive. German producer Syrinx, who has already put out material on Rush Hour, makes nods to European predecessors like Kirk Degiorgio and Steve Rachmad without losing a distinctive edge. "Breakdown" is powered by subtle, understated beats, but it's the filtered melodies, coated in a metallic veneer, that really stand out. Like a slightly more austere As One, its subtle twists and turns make up for whatever it may lack in immediacy. "Dubsequence" is a different matter; although its sweeping chords lend it an epic facade, the dubby house beats are reminiscent of Steve Rachmad's old Tons of Tones releases or even some of his Rachmad Project material on Outland. The driving, filtered percussion soon brings the listener back to 2010 and the realisation that this is no retro pastiche. That said, the final track, fittingly called "Outro," is a glorious, widescreen piece of ambience that wouldn't have sounded out of place in Blade Runner. Thanks to what came before it, we can forgive Syrinx this irresistible lapse.
