AntonZap - Social Background

  • AntonZap's new label, the aptly named Ethereal Sound, seems to take deep house to a logical conclusion. Airy to the point of fluffiness, the imprint's two releases are so ethereal that they almost descend into Pottery Barn sampler soundtrack territory. Almost. Zap, the producer behind both, gives the tunes enough bite to remind you that there is dancing to be done (or, at the very least, can be done) while they play. "Can't Tell You" stops mid-track at the exact moment that it threatens to fade into oblivion, and pushes forward content in the knowledge that you're back in its clutches. "Social Background" hovers elegantly, its melody a holding pattern that allows for the drum pattern to find new ways to punch you with a velvet glove. Like its predecessor, it seems to be a natural aural accompaniment to dark red mugs of tea and doing the New York Times Sunday crossword. It's wispy stuff, but Zap's passion for this part of the evening is one that is entirely unique in a field dominated by those eager to prove they can play harder and faster than their contemporaries. This should be celebrated.
