Karm - Heaven EP

  • Barraca Music has grown to include producers in its stable not named AFFKT over the past year. As such, the distinct sound set out in its trio of initial releases has changed as well. That's no bad thing. Romanian duo NoiDoi has impressed discerning jocks like Petre Inspirescu, and self-effacing label boss Andrew Grant has even finally graced listeners with his first full release on the imprint. Milanese DJ and producer Karm further adds to the label's evolving sound with his debut release, Heaven. The trio of tracks are a mixed bag. "Grubjo," a collaboration with Matteo Milleri, is tough tech house that pushes things with a bass pulse on the 1 and confusing vocal samples. You can hear the snare drums that typified AFFKT's work for the label in the background, but they're echoes rather than the main event. In contrast, "Dora" is contemplative and deeper fare, melancholic IDM with a house beat. "Heaven" splits the difference between the two styles, seeing Karm sampling a vocal—"thought I saw an angel"—that lightens the relatively standard tech house backing. It's not reinventing the wheel, but for a debut EP, it shows plenty of promise.
