Miles Sagnia - The Causal Structure EP

  • Should Miles Sagnia be living in Detroit? At the moment, it seems so. The UK producer's output under his own name thus far falls neatly in line with the work of Patrice Scott and Keith Worthy, two of the Motor City's most celebrated new lights. Sagnia has previously released material on Worthy's Aesthetic Audio, and his newest 12-inch for his own imprint, Atmospheric Existence, marks out the same ambient and deep house territory. (So much so that B-side "Miaplacidus" even sounds like an alternate mix of the previously released "Relativity.") The similar sound palette is an issue with much of The Causal Structure EP. But Sagnia's talent for composition sees him through. Things start splendidly; "The Fall" is the best thing here, a deep and moody electro burner that sounds nothing like his deep house brethren. Things get safer from there, however, with both "Face the Music" and "Follow the Light" doing little to distinguish themselves from his previous 12-inch. Sagnia's sound is unique from Worthy and Scott in that you can hear the echoes of his classical music background in the complexity of his melodies: This isn't your usual one chord deep house. Clearly Sagnia has the chops to add something important to the genre. Aside from "The Fall," though, it's hard to call The Causal Structure EP anything more than "very accomplished."
