Jenifa Mayanja - Music 4 Adults

  • Music 4 adults, huh? It's almost on par with intelligent dance music in the "ill-fated naming" sweepstakes. I mean, I don't know a lot of people that want to listen to music for kids. But there's an equally-as-strong desire in just about everyone to feel like you'll never grow too old to enjoy cutting-edge tunes either. Music for adults doesn't have to mean "music to put sweatpants on at 6:30 PM when you get home from work and sit down to watch the evening news." Sure, Jenifa Mayanja's deep house is pleasant enough to invite the stink eye from your younger brother who listens to Rusko and nothing but. Saxophones feature. Yet each of the tracks on Music 4 Adults contains a little something for the young'uns in the audience as well. "Eye of the Storm"'s minimal bassline is funkier than it has any right to be, and "Unveiling You" works itself into a quiet frenzy of tinkling piano, sampled crowd noise and punchy synths. "At Your Discretion," which closes things out, is the most adult thing here, plotting its course slowly with help from Mayanja's sampled voice. It's also the weakest thing here, precisely because it sounds like something my parents might tolerate. Elsewhere, Mayanja treats us like the adults we want to be: A little bit hip, a little bit ready to dance, a little bit afraid of sweatpants.
