Murr - Sunday Morning EP

  • Murr's new 12-inch for New Kanada is a bit of a mystery. Only one original appears here, with "Superior" and "Forgotten"—two tunes that have apparently never seen the light of day in unremixed form—are reconfigured toward wildly different ends. "Sunday Morning," the original in question, sounds unremarkable at first, a bit track-y. But over time its subtle, niggling bassline that sounds like it's been left out in the sun a few days too long reveals itself to be hypnotic and charming. Bells and distant voices also find their way into this surprisingly complex track, which should find favor across a wide spectrum of genres. Marc Schneider & Dan M provide a relatively straight-ahead take of "Superior." You get the sense that it's the most "playable" thing here, even if that ensures it's also the least interesting on offer. As tech house goes, the elements are all fascinating—breathy vocal samples, tweaked synths, watery organ sounds—but the end result is less than the sum of its parts. Not so for the B2, however: The sales notes for Sunday Morning call Mood Edit's version of "Forgotten" a raw house remix. I'd advise you to take a listen to the sample before buying on sight. I'm fascinated by the thing, as he edits the guitar playing of Takeshi Nishimoto expertly into a four-four template. You'd never find something like this on bastions of raw house like Uzuri, but somehow it seems right at home on this consistently compelling imprint.
