Milton Bradley - The Unheard Voice From Outer Space

  • It's amazing, when you think about it, how techno can still sound alien more than two decades after the genre began. Milton Bradley's debut EP for Prologue, The Unheard Voice from Outer Space, with its almost cliche track titles and silly paperback sci-fi artwork is almost laughable on the face of it. But put the needle to the wax and you're immediately transported, Bradley's sure production hand guiding you down to somewhere beyond his illusion to listen an interdimensional entity and the unheard voice from outer space. Unlike many of his techno brethren at the moment, Bradley's secret is his subtlety. "Somewhere Beyond" chugs slowly along, rarely raising its head above the murk. The same goes for "The Unheard Voice," whose main melodic element sounds like a robotic cricket walking back and forth down a hallway very slowly. The only overt moment on the release is "Interdimensional Entity," which sounds like "When Love Feels Like Crying" gone headfuck. But even that seems reserved in a way, only interested in its own headspace. That's precisely why Bradley's tracks here sound as alien as they do. Self-possessed and unnerving, they're among his best work yet.
