Various Artists - Backtalk / Tournesol

  • Everyone uses shorthand in their daily life. Music-wise, genres narrow things down. Labels synonymous with a style make sorting things easier. And cover art can turn you on. Or, in the case of Meerestief, off. You see, it's hard to take a label seriously that doesn't take care with every piece of its presentation, and it's clear from the unimaginative graphic design of the imprint that they assuredly do not. It's worth holding off judgment on this particular book, however, until you've heard the contents. Walter G. Ercolino's increasingly heady label employs Daniela Stickroth and Wacker & Zittrich on this consistent 12-inch. Stickroth's contribution in particular heads off to deep and raw territory that wouldn't sound out of place on Adam X's Sonic Groove. "Backtalk" isn't particularly revelatory, but its expert arrangement gives it a power that would have been otherwise missing had it been produced by lesser hands. "Tournesol," meanwhile, sees techno vets Thilo Wacker and Jorg Zittrich build a fine groove from clanking metal and steam vents. It doesn't roll in the same way as "Backtalk," opting for a pounding beat that belies the innocuous jpg or 12-inch cover that is unfortunately meant to represent it.
