Manuel Tur - Agrafena

  • A track like "Agrafena," which just builds and builds and builds until it can't build anymore deserves something like "Prelude: The Priceless Message," which is effectively three minutes of prologue. Manuel Tur's skill here impresses. "Prelude" is a peerless set opener that leads directly into "Agrafena," but it's more interesting to listen to for its remarkable sound design. It's clear that Tur has aspirations beyond the dance floor, and it quickly becomes apparent that he likely has the ability to do much more than we've been led to believe. Potential aside, "Agrafena" and "Dream & Delirium" both serve as reminders that Tur's artistic bent rarely gets in the way of making people move. Each tune seems to consciously take from the same set of sounds, making for a remarkably cohesive package. "Agrafena," as we mentioned, simply increases the pressure for six-and-a-half minutes until its nigh-on unbearable and Tur somehow scales things back effortlessly. "Dream & Delirium," meanwhile, luxriuates in a riff that is at once vicious and calmly enveloping. That it can be both at the same time is the power of dub. But it's also the talent of Tur, who has quietly amassed one of the most impressive discographies of the past few years. I, for one, can't wait to see where he goes from here.
