STL - Things from the Basement

  • If, as its title suggests, these are things from Stephan Laubner's basement—the discard pile—we might as well simply give up. Harz's finest comes correct here with a collection of four raw and deep tunes. There is little straying from the path that Laubner has set out in the past few years. Analogue is the name of the game, with the only major differentiator being a higher-than-usual preponderance of skippiness in the tracks on offer. Both "Vintage Hunter" and "Wasabi Flavoured" bounce along with a reserved glee before "Too Slow" does what it says on the tin and sinks things in the murk. There's no complaint to be had there, though. To get this deep is something that few producers can—or want—to achieve with their work. Laubner has basically dedicated his (artistic) life to the cause. The same goes for Intrusion, who repays STL's remix on Echospace late last year with a dub of "In My Dreams." It clocks in at a cool 100 BPM, finding plenty to say in between the beats. Like Laubner's efforts for Something, it's hard to say that it stands out. But that's simply because everything around it is so remarkably good.
