Tom Dicicco - Material Things

  • There is scant information available about UK producer Tom Dicicco on the internet, and except for a remix on a similarly unknown label last year, very little music has been officially released. But someone at Baud obviously knows more than we do about the producer, as the imprint's second release sees them giving Dicicco room to stretch his legs on a proper EP, and he definitely doesn't disappoint. "Material Things" comes out swinging, instantly hitting you with dub chords, blissful atmospherics and a driving kick that definitely means business. There's a haunting drone to the entire track that keeps it squarely aimed at the darkest corners of the evening, its hypnotic nature in line with today's techno tastes. On the flip, Patrick Graesser delivers a remix of the title track. Taking things up a notch, the somewhat dubby style of the original is warped in to a Berghain banger. He never takes it so far as to overtake the beauty of the original, though: Graesser delicately weaves the parts of Dicicco's in to his own, repitching segments to add a unique yet driving taking on the master. It's only fitting that the runout etching in between the two tracks of the B-side reads "when the lights are off, the sound is the only means of direction." Like most good B2 cuts go, "Empire" is the sleeper cut of the modest EP. It starts simply enough with a 909 kick and spacey percussion, but when the evolving, growing synth washes begin to filter in, the breadth of the young producer's productions start to become apparent. He might be new to the scene, but Dicicco has definitely been paying attention longer than we'll likely ever know. Here's hoping that he doesn't lose this profoundly masterful scope on techno in years to come.
