Marcello Napoletano - Listen in Dreaming

  • Last year's Prescription of Love release earned Marcello Napoletano much-deserved kudos thanks to its loose, at times almost freeform exploration of deep house. Unsurprisingly, on the follow-up he pokes holes in house music's existing structures. "Hey Listen" sounds like a classic US garage track, its warm chords married with a super soulful vocal sample, yet the beats are more complex, less straightforward than the stereotypical dubby backing track. On "House Class," Napoletano goes weirder, with the kind of dense, clipped beats that prevailed on "Prescription" and a detuned organ sequence that sounds like a tone-deaf Bodycode on downers. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does. Keeping the listener guessing, the Italian producer then turns his attention to faithfully recreating classic styles. Detroit techno is first, with the crashing, flailing snares and dark pulsing bass undercurrents of "In Dreaming" sounding like classic Derrick May or a leaner, less musically inclined Stacey Pullen. Finally, he goes back to his house roots for "Vibe." This time, the beats are more direct, providing the basis for a perfect representation of '90s US tribal house. At times reverential, on other occasions idiosyncratic, the one constant with Marcello Napoletano is that he'll keep the listener guessing.
