Deadbeat / Fenin - Romeo Kalbima

  • The latest offering on Denmark's Echocord Colour imprint is the inspired collaboration of Deadbeat and Fenin. Here, the Berlin duo combine brilliantly to bring out the best aspects of each other's sound into a seamless blend that begs for a more prolonged cooperation. The opener "Romeo Kalimba" works almost like one of those 3-D steereograms. Stare at it with straight eyes (or ears) and it sits up like a straight dub techno track, yet cross your eyes and suddenly it skanks more to a dubstep rhythm, perhaps reflecting the respective sounds of Deadbeat and Fenin in perfect balance. Although driving and tough, the real joy is to be found in the high end details where a splattering of microscopic sounds add cryptic textures and pressures to the dance floor friendly bottom end. It's "Teach the Devil's Son" that impresses most, though. The opening salvo gives the expectation that it will transform into a heavy banger, but instead it slinks away into more minimal terrain, riding out a paranoid mental groove over the unfolding waves of echo.
