René Breitbarth - With Or Without Doris

  • René Breitbarth's lengthy discography has a number of incongruous gems within it, perhaps most visibly among them the delightful "Bob Ross," which samples the eponymous PBS painter over a relatively innocuous tech house beat. On his latest EP for his digital imprint Deep Data, Breitbarth continues this trend, sampling an uncredited Doris on three of its four tracks. The first finds her relatively unadorned, cut-up only to be singing in time to a lovely lullaby of tinkling bells. The second, "More Doris," fits her into a marching tempo in a format reminiscent of Lusine's "Two Dots" rendering of singer Vilja Larjosto. Again, the focus is largely on the melody, giving room to an organ to lend extra warmth to an already heated atmosphere. Breitbarth cools things off on "Almost Doris," as he drops a specialist flute-led deep house jam that will likely be a perfect soundtrack to next year's Club der Visionäre sets where mixing doesn't matter as much as atmosphere. As for the last track, we need to refer to the info text, which states that this release is all about Doris…which makes "Without Doris" a rather uninteresting proposition. Breitbarth's bouncy beat doesn't have much of interest going on around it (Doris, flutes, etc.) and isn't strong enough to stand on its own. That said, it's a minor disappointment, and, Breitbarth willing, Doris will be back again to correct it.
