Donnacha Costello - Ten Thousand Hours

  • Donnacha Costello: The comeback story of 2009? It's not clear exactly where he's come back from, to be honest, yet the birth of his Look Long label has certainly felt like a Renaissance of sorts, resulting in some of his finest work to date. Coming 15 years after first stepping into the game, this is no small feat. But Costello's insistence on challenging himself is the key to his success: The material on Look Long sounds little like what came before on Minimise; the dance-centric work on Minimise sounded little like his ambient tracks on Mille Plateaux. "Ten Thousand Hours" is yet another distinctive tune from Costello, a one-sided piece of vinyl that earns its place by housing a yearning synth riff that sears into your brain immediately. It's a tear-jerker yet again, but not in the same downcast fashion that previous Look Long tracks have been—instead this one is aimed at the dance floor, with a healthy percussion track marking time in the back. The swirling synths—and dedication to melody—remain, but expect to hear this Look Long dropped in the middle of sets rather than at the beginning or end.
