Enola - Lost in Shibuya

  • At some point along the way in electronic music, pop became a bit of a dirty word. Consequently, the divide between the underground and the overground is seemingly wider than ever, occupied by groups that aren't quite embraced by purists and aren't even known by the more mainstream audiences that they're trying to attract. Regardless of intention, a good pop song is a good pop song. And "Lost in Shibuya" fits the bill, wrapping a buoyant trance-y bassline to its attendant melody, while a vocal appears every so often to remind us that it "ain't so bad." I think. The singer could be saying something else; his voice is obscured behind effects and doesn't seem interested in audibility as much as adding further melodic color to a rainbow of light. Quarion's dub is the left side of the Dark Side of the Moon prism, reflecting a shard of the original's brightness. This is no bad thing: That particular shard of melody is lovely, and Quarion's beat is chunky enough to bring sets of greyer palettes closer to the light. While it certainly won't help win over those mainstream audiences, it may give those underground purists a reason to check what occasioned it on the flipside.
