Monolake - Atlas (T++ Remix)

  • It can be easy to dismiss the work of a distinctive artist as sounding too by-the-numbers. While Monolake member and solo artist Torsten Pröfrock is no stranger to this unique problem, with this release he adds to his level of difficulty by remixing a track that he had a hand in producing. But even if the two tracks here offer few surprises, it shows there is plenty more wealth to mine from the T++ sound. Pröfrock's remix of "Atlas" is almost an inverted form of the original with the addition of his trademark intentionally sloppy and sprayed percussion patterns that splash across the channels like a Pollock drip painting. This strafing makes this lighter than the original with its heavy, moulded bass, although there is still plenty of pressure for the dance floor. The exotic, Shackleton-esque jungle ambience also makes way for a perpetual tide of phased industrial noise that transplants the sense of danger from animal to machine. Like last year's Apple Pips release, the original track on the other side comes with an unimaginative name. It works in the same way as the remix, although it's slightly less busy. Jittery, two-step beats hurry nervously beneath the same sort of interweaving metallic sheen, but there is the sense that there is no real direction to run to. It's not a big leap forward from his recent material, but it's pointless to complain when you're dealing with music that is already so weirdly organic, pressurised and intricately detailed.
