Ost & Kjex feat. Mung - Dirty Mind

  • Many people are globally familiar with much of the Oslo electronic scene, yet Luna Flicks still somehow flies under the radar. The imprint, run by a group of local DJs and led by Mung of Mungolian Jetset and Øyvind Morken, has released material from artists such as Lindstrøm, Blackbelt Andersen, Hardway Bros. and Rune Lindbæk. On this outing, though, it's the turn of Ost & Kjex with their rendition of Prince's tale of young desire, "Dirty Mind." The pop cover is a tried-and-true creative resource, but Norwegian disco producers seem to like it more than your average electronic knob twiddler. Todd Terje, Mungolian and Prince Thomas have covered everything from Wham to Bob Marley, and this particular release sees the duo similarly using the form to experiment a bit and trade in the deeper sounds found on their recent Diynamic releases for Moroder-esque synth lines. The arpeggiated melodies intertwine with each other over a fast tech house beat, and are surrounded with the signature spacious sound that Oslo and Luna Flicks have become synonymous with. Vocals-wise, though, is where things get special, as these two Norwegian men in their 30s turn the tale of teen lust into a twisted story of two older men longing for teenage love. Sung in falsetto—in the same far-out fashion as Jamie Jones' "Summertime"—only adds to the bizarre quality of the tune. For those who can't take the Ost & Kjex vocal experience, however, they've graciously provided a dub version on the flip, "Underneath the Stars," which showcases just how much work and production is going on...er...underneath.
