Taron Trekka - Artys Iisii EP

  • Plenty of techno producers list Carl Craig and Moodymann as influences on their MySpace, but while retreads of their sound are a dime a dozen, few are interested—or able—in mimicing their approach to production. Judging by Andreas Kriester (Crisder) and Daniel Müller-Sachs (D.M.S.)'s latest 12-inch for Freude Am Tanzen, the duo better known as Taron Trekka are firm proponents of the latter. "Shirol" is a creepy crawler of a track, weaving in and out the high-pitched house string chord that runs throughout. "Don't have done my part" goes the disembodied voice as crackling claps and fathomless bass puncture the stillness. It's dislocated, a ghost of a tune and sounds like little else being released at the moment. "Krasse & Zick" is more straightforward, even though drunken horns and plenty of raw organ licks provide the melodic content. Again, though, Trekka avoid cliché via the simple trick of adding sampled chatter, giving you the sense that you're in a bar with a band playing the track right in front of you. That, and using a long enough sample to remind you that this has nothing to do with the current house revival. "Stock Dich Quer" is no less personality-laden, but it doesn't quite hit in the way that the other two tracks do. The revolving bassline gives you vertigo, but there's nothing there to hold you up as you're falling under its spell.
