Unknown Artist - Tangled / P.G.B.

  • Whether you call him half of Rub N Tug or half of DFA's Still Going, Dr. Dunks or now C.O.M.B.i., Eric Duncan's style remains basically unchanged: hot classic disco and soul cut 'n' spliced to make that old school heat work in newer, higher octane dance floor situations. As his stellar How We Do in NYC mix CD from earlier this summer attested, he can make those Philly Soul strings, Boney M-brand percolations and arcane diva mewls from a simpler, bygone time sound like the most recent and revelatory soundstuff out there. On I-side "Tangled," the refrain of "wrapped up in your love" gets howled by a honeyed yet deep male vocalist (perhaps Teddy Pendergrass?). Meanwhile, ascendant horn stabs and string dervishes drive the track higher and higher. The flip (J-side) has a more Balearic twang of guitar and a slower pace, riding a drum and conga pattern that is reminiscent of ESG's beat on "You're No Good." A shimmering haze wafts up, hangs and melts, like that watery mirage you get from Gotham's sun-baked pavement.
