André Lodemann - Coming Home

  • André Lodemann's record shop trilogy closes with his newest 12-inch for Best Works. This time out, the producer pays tribute to Berlin's Oye Records, a shop known for its solid selection of jazz, funk and World music in a city devoted to techno. But you won't find much out of the ordinary on the platter: Lodemann's title track is a slow and funky sample odyssey that wrings the pathos out of two piano chords and a cloud of ambience. The bassline is the main attraction, keeping time and subtly transforming itself from a round, warm hug into an ugly beast. Pikaya turns up for remix duties, turning up the tempo and offering plenty of confusing touches. It's busy where the original was simple, and at times it gets a bit cluttered and confusing as a result of the producer's myriad ideas. On the flip, "Zap" sees Lodemann going straight for the jugular. He's proved himself over the course of his Best Works oeuvre to be wildly diverse, and this is his perhaps his most self-consciously banging track, mixing popping chords and a descending bassline often hidden by the pulsating main theme. Relatively unremarkable, it's further forgotten via Norman Nodge's stellar rework, which is dub techno of the highest order. Utilizing the template, but not slavishly devoted to recreating the sound, Nodge ends up with a remarkably restrained result that works its way through a variety of looks and feels. Moody and marvelous, it's the pick of the bunch.
