Jens Zimmermann - X11 / X12

  • "X11" and "X12" may sound suitably futuristic, but the future in which they're based is a lonely if not entirely unsteady place. Shooting straight from Jens Zimmerman's fingers, these hefty bodies of dub minimal contain that smothered "club-next-door" sound that has garnished his recent EPs, pickled with an array of twitching and tinkering sounds all ready to fall apart until the solid sub arrives to reassemble them. Opener "X11" teeters on the brink of instability, with clattering robot claws and crumbling caves providing a desolate soundtrack to the dark underground hole that Zimmerman has hidden us in. Users of anything remotely psychedelic in substance may want to skip this one for the time being, but everyone else should happily indulge themselves. Lightening the mood a little, whilst maintaining a reassuringly deep vibe, "X12" is the club filtered to 200Hz with only small tears in the spectral blind giving a teasing glimpse of the higher frequencies. Despite this, "X12" is a banger, a driving techno machine that chugs its way to the finish line in 14 minutes via deep synth lines, ratchet hits and unsettling drones. In sum: A perfect EP for those who prefer to keep the blinds down during the summer months, or for anyone with a hint of love for deep, organic minimal.
