Soul Minority - I Remember House EP

  • Like dub techno, deep house sometimes has a tendency of leaving you wanting that little bit more. I'm always a little bit nonplussed by what people sometimes claim passes for the genre, and while it's a broad church, my favourite aspects of any kind of dance music have—funnily enough—hinged on their ability to make you move. Soul Minority's latest offering on Pack Up And Dance does exactly that. "Come Back 4 More" jacks along in a linear fashion and has a phat bass that is emphasised further by a subtle organ with an eponymous vocal sample that sets things off nicely. It chugs along minding its own business slipping in some delicate touches on the way. There's a warmth to it, but a tinge of aggression too. "I Remember House," meanwhile, uses a clichéd monologue that nonetheless is exactly what is sometimes needed to revive flagging wallflowers. Again, the bass is powerful and the "shake it" backing vocals add depth, as does the keyboard. The simple elements are very well-produced—crisp handclaps make a big difference, but they don't dominate, and neither does the vocal, which makes it a track that the entire spectrum of househeads should be able to dig without feeling too self-conscious. "Leave Home," though, is probably my least favourite of the tracks on offer, but that's only a reflection on the female vocal, nothing else. As with the other two tunes, the production is of a consistent high standard. While music like this will always have its detractors, let's not forget that tracks like these are the glue that bind a set together. They're occasionally a little bit derivative, sure, but they're nonetheless effective and work well at the beginning or end of the night.
