Leif - Designed With That In Mind

  • To deep house or not to deep house? That is often the question these days, and one that I'm sometimes not sure of the answer to. Fear Of Flying stalwart Leif comes correct here, though, with a slice of classic deep house that doesn't have its head so far up its own arse that it can't see the dance floor. It's a basic original and remix package double-header, and thankfully there's something different on offer with each. "Designed With That in Mind" is simple in structure, and maybe a little mundane, but makes good use of a vocal—an eponymous incantation that supplements the simple snippets around which the percussive-heavy piece has been built for about the first half of the track's length. Once the vocal takes off, things take an altogether more ambient tone. The star of the show though is undoubtedly the Two Armadillo's Tribute To Trax remix. One of the paradoxes of house and techno in the here and now is how the past can be so obviously and unashamedly plundered and the results so well-received. Tweaking the timeless has always been a nice little earner, but where it differs in this genre is that it's rarely associated with a lack of originality as long as the artists are regarded as proficient in their field. Anyway, I come to praise this release, not to bury it. Two Armadillos do a sterling job on the track, rendering it unrecognisable from the original in the process and supplying a mournful piano while keeping the original's vocal snippet intact. It comes at you like a Larry Heard curveball, and it's very, very nice indeed.
