Koljah and Oliver Deutschmann - Slowly We Rot

  • Koljah and Oliver Deutschmann have been working together for a few years now and with each successive release it seems that the duo tap further and further into each others psyche. Whereas their early releases seemed to reflect the ideas of two similar but distinct producers, "Eaten Back to Life" is a fully formed deep house groover that sounds as though it might've been swiped directly from the archives of Motor City Drum Ensemble. Koljah and Detuschmann, however, layer a sample over top the proceedings, giving an added dimensions to the proceedings. The echoed and somewhat distracted voice blabbers on for a while and gradually finds itself as the main event alongside a looming organ, wispy trumpets and melodic percussion. Following it up, Ed Davenport's Stripped Mix lives up to its name, washing away nearly everything to create an ominous, psychedelic rework of the tune that should go down well in the dead of the night. Its spare, otherworldly vibe is striking—unlike its digital counterpart that plays it far safer. On the flip, Koljah and Detuschmann go for peaktime. The tempo and grandeur is increased with solid—but not fantastic—results. "Altars of Madness" and its pounding rhythm and relentless synth melody sound mighty similar to a host of other tracks on the market at the moment. "Altars of Madness" is a great name for a tune, but this bit of mimicry doesn't deserve it.
