Adultnapper - Anglia EP

  • Adultnapper is best when he indulges his inner voices. Case in point: "Tewa," which was a rare heart-string tugger from the Brooklyn-based producer. It was one of his finest moments despite being unlike much of anything he's ever done. The same goes for "Madeleine"—a track that referenced Proust in its title and construction. Its backwards acoustic guitar was quirk, plain and simple, and made it stand out among the finely tuned tech house found on the Audiomatique mix on which it first appeared. Given a little room and the courage to stretch out, and good things happen for the man. That much is also obvious from Napper's latest EP—and his first offering for Crosstown Digital Rebels. This time the object of interest is his use of disembodied voices and the way they warble around the stereo field. A steady thumping kick and melody pound their way into your brain with an unrelenting urgency, but it's these spooky voices that will keep you coming back for more. "Other People" pumps along more slowly, but no less strangely. It features those same unanswered digitally masked yelps over a patient minor key melody. It's a plaintive tune that, played on an acoustic piano, might recall one of Nine Inch Nails' softer moments complete with a tech house beat. Spare and moody, it feels much longer than its seven-and-a-half minutes. And, in this case, that's a very good thing.
