Inflight Entertainment presents McMillan Sessions 01

  • Much respected in the breaks scene and one of the original founders of TCR, Danny McMillan conjures up another mix CD for his Inflight Entertainment label following on from his High Altitude Breaks mix from last year. Quite a few tracks appear in other breakbeat releases and it can slightly disappoint hardcore breaks fans who are always after different tracks when they buy different releases. Melodic and 2-steppy is Night Watchman using a soft bass line. Sets the tone for the CD - dark and quite moody. Light Fingered by Bladey gets a remix treatment from TCR boys 2 Sinners. Apparently the original is a tribal tech-house mix and has been reworked by 2 Sinners into a tribal breaks mix with an over-eager percussion hit throughout. McMillan himself works with Tab to pull out Detroit. Probably nothing to do with the Detroit scene, just an overdose of samples proclaiming "Detroit", "Innovation" and "Land Of The Brave". McMillan and Tab also contributed Supersonic which also appeared on Taking Care Of Business Building up the groove and moving to some electro grooves is Freeeks In The Morning by Spork. Pull The Choke by Plastic Pervert is similar to some Plump DJ's offerings keeping things dancefloor oriented. On the Eukabreaks label, which should a force to be reckoned with in the future of breaks. Rumbleweed by the Albino Allstars has been getting rave reviews from the likes of Meat Katie and it's easy to see why. Tough, tribal and dirty breakbeats throughout using a simple double tap bassline. Definitely one for any breaks DJ's shopping list. Fingerlickin' fans out there will appreciate the inclusion of Drumattic Twins' Invincible Bass. On it's own, it's quite a boring repetitious track, however it can do wonders in a mix. Orbit by the Second Hand Satellites is a minimal tribal breaks effort. Slightly hypnotic with the light cymbal sound in the background and the "pop" sound drums - similar to some african tribal percussion instruments. The legends of breakbeat, Pilgrem and Arthur Baker give up Face It for the mix, which was also included in Pilgrem's Tribalizm mix released earlier in the year. More 4 to the floor tribal sounds, utilising some old hip hop samples as well. Getting back to some melodic and atmospheric breaks with Mt's Music with a blissful synth line, it sounds like what LTJ and the Good Looking stable would do if they were to produce nu-skool breaks, but less jazzy. To round it off, Ed Solo and Skool Of Thought Feel The Music - a 2-step tune laced with female vocals, synthesised bass and an old skool hip hop sample to boot. Personally, Loud Noise on the other side of the 12" does it for me. The CD is mixed well by McMillan himself, however due to the fact that almost half the tracks appear on other CD's it just feels like it came out a bit too late. For fans of the slightly chilled out nu-skool breaks style ie somewhere in between DJ Hyper's Bedrock Breaks CD 1 and DJ Hyper's Bedrock Breaks CD 2, this is for you.
