Patrice Scott - Far Away

  • Patrice Scott has been steadily elevating his reputation over the last three years, having already become a popular DJ on the local Detroit scene since the days of the city's first wave of techno producers. His Sistrum Recordings imprint has become synonymous with consistently quality deep house music, mostly thanks to his own smooth and evocative productions, which have already won him many fans outside of his Detroit hometown. Following on from the caliginous, minor key tracks of his The Evolutions EP, Scott's latest sees a return to the dreamy atmospherics of his debut release, but the mood is more melancholic this time around. Indeed, the track title seems to capture the spirit of the music perfectly, with the looped pads and simple two chord progression conjuring up a feeling of distance and emotional emptiness. Herein lies one of the major appeals of Scott's studio work—his ability to use melodies to embody his tracks with a certain sensuality, without ever sounding overbearing or trite. California-based producer Mike Edge returns to the Sistrum fold for the remix on the flipside, and sees him replacing Scott's tough kick drum for a skippy and light percussive sound. Intertwining synths bubble and swell in the mix, and Edge applies his own slinky bassline to propel the track along. Both tracks will slot into warm-up sets and post-clubbing sessions, but it's Scott's original that wins out with its raw groove and sentimental inclination.
