Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place Remixes, Pt. 2

  • Loco Dice once again opens up his voluminous for this second slate of remixes from his 2008 full-length, 7 Dunham Place. Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann is first up on the A side, treading water for more than half of his lengthy 12-and-a-half minute remake of "Tight Laces." The track was one of Dunham's glitchiest, and Dettmann takes advantage of the source material by battening it down into a techno groove that treads lightly, but inexorably—until it changes course completely near its end when an entirely new remix seems to pop in unannounced ("Response 2" apparently), one a bit closer in line with the normal Ostgut sound. Onur Özer does what he does best to "Breakfast at Nina's," layering on a dizzying amount of rhythmic complexity and sonic burbling. It never quite takes off, though, instead acting as a solid placeholder track that waits for something—or someone—to take it to the next level. DJs that don't mind throwing on one Dice track after another might think about Marco Carola's "M Train to Brooklyn" for that honor, as its slow-burning mannered groove has just enough pump to work in a variety of situations. The highlight here, though, has to be Mike Huckaby' S Y N T H Remix of "Black Truffles in the Snow." Whereas the previous version was "jazzed out," here it bangs with the sort of purpose that makes you forget just how loopy it still is. It's funny how tweaking a few elements can make all the difference, but on a release full of remixes, it also seems fitting. Get this one for the Huckaby mix itself, you won't be sorry.
