Seldom Felt - Seldom Felt 3

  • Like the Wax, Equalized and Ancient Methods records, Seldom Felt releases are part of a small group of hand-stamped, anonymously produced labels that want to remain in the shadows exactly at the juncture where, thanks to the internet, techno has never been more visible. Perhaps it's a reaction against the always accessible nature of broadband-driven music consumption that has led these labels to revert to the white label and anonymity culture of the late '80s and '90s—or maybe the authors are sick of being confronted with a slew of weak, watered down techno and want to make a stand with their back to basics presentation. This may explain why Seldom Felt shares a musical bond with the other hand-stamped labels, drawing on past influences. The third in the series draws heavily on '90s techno: "Tarpuntine Sun" is a huge jacking techno track, which features driving percussion from the outset, followed quickly by a prowling, predatory bass that never relents. "Face Value" is also based on a straightforward approach, with stomping, almost distorted beats underpinning a wild analogue acid sequence that keeps on building. Like the first two releases, 3 makes for an intriguing deviation from the prevailing musical climate.
