Thomas Schumacher - Picanha

  • We don't have much power over the guys who make the important decisions over at Get Physical, but we have to ask: Who thought it was a bright idea to make Thomas Schumacher's "Picanha" a digital-only release? Kudos, of course, for releasing it, but what was the worry here? "Picanha" is a ridiculously infectious horn-laden tech house tune with a groove that would get any desk jockey wriggling in their seat. (And maybe even on a dance floor too.) It starts with a synth and kick that would normally be good enough for most producers to ride for seven minutes without fussing, but Schumacher is hardly done. In come the horns...and we're off to the races. There's no palate-cleansing, mind-erasing "Pink Boots" moment, but "Picanha" is a groover and it does its job strikingly. Call it Akufen goes Get Physical. Er, digital. "Late Night Thing" is the other file that you can buy, but it doesn't quite pop in the same way as "Picanha" despite a voice imploring Schumacher to "Make it bumpin'." Schumacher tries valiantly to react to himself, but instead of bumping, we get muddled. The bass and melody technically work fine together, but are bunched up in such a way that any hopes for actual funk get lost in the mix. Digital for this tune? Fine. But "Picanha" deserves better.
