- One can forgive Delano Smith for being yet another artist who feels it necessary to remind us of the name of his hometown on "Something for Myself." But only because the results are pretty damn amazing. Yep, there's a potent whiff of authenticity surrounding Sunrise, never more so than on "Trans" which is an exercise in fundamental hypnotics—the type of track that has no end in sight until something comes in and brings things down. It's not necessarily Detroit-sounding in the classic sense, though: Instead, this is prime modern Detroit deep house, the kind that Patrice Scott and others specialize in.
"Synergy" has more than a whiff of Tony Watson's peerless "Passages" about it and sets the spiritual aspect of the EP in stone. It's as psychedelic as this music gets. It's by no means complicated, just well-assembled, while "Cosmos Revisited" completes the quartet, pulsing like a far-distant galaxy. It's by far the bounciest track you'll find here.
Detroit is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment. (Which isn't to suggest that it ever went away.) Its artists are collectively renewing their vigour and producing some wonderful work. Maybe it's a subconscious effort to put European pretenders in their place? Whatever the case, Sunrise is yet another example of fire from Detroit.
